Cyrus Smith is as influential as he is brilliant. The former Winnipegger now Berliner, among other things, is an artist, a chef, a free thinker and one seriously interesting guy. His visit to Winnipeg coincided with the RAW: Almond pop-up dinner on the river and he graciously donated his time to assist for the opening weekend as well as create the menu and run the tapas bar for an evening. Watching him create food alongside his longtime friend and former co-chef Mandel Hitzer was nothing short of beautiful. His artistic prowess shines through in his cuisine while his unbridled energy and infectious smile leave everyone wanting more of his company and his creations.
Having moved to Berlin not so long ago, he began his art career in Winnipeg alongside attending art school in the city. After his move he remained heavily tied to the city through friends and family as well as his art. Gurevich Fine Art, a gallery located in the Exchange District of Winnipeg and conveniently owned by our father Howard Gurevich, represents Cyrus as an artist and exhibits his works regularly. Explaining his work can be a bit difficult but here is some of what he had to say
“I have never been able to wrap my practice up in a nice tight ribbon and say, “I make (blank) art!” There are however underlying themes that tie my pieces together. I’m really into found object installation right now, but combined with more traditional modes of painting (I’m not a normal person if I’m not painting). I appreciate what Graffiti has done to challenge our perspectives in the public landscape so I bring that into my work as well, but to be dubbed a graffiti artist is too 1980’s. I am happy with artist.”
Cyrus is a strong representation of what Winnipeg truly is. He has a creative soul and a passionate mind that are both complimented by his humble and caring personality. As a long time friends of Cyrus we are happy we had the chance to connect with him and we cannot wait until the next time. Stay tuned for more features on RAW: Almond guest chefs and Gurevich Fine Art in the future.
