This past Saturday we were lucky enough to participate in an extraordinary Winnipeg event. The Table for 1200 was organized by StorefrontMB and 5468796 Architecture to highlight Winnipeg’s design scene in a truly unique way: a dinner for 1200 guests at one table. So the firms teamed up with the creators of RAW:almond, Mandel Hitzer (chef/owner of Deer + Almond) and Joe Kalturnyk (owner of RAW Gallery) along with Ben Kramer (who runs Diversity Food Services at the University of Winnipeg) to provide the food. I joined the ranks of 21 servers for the evening while Brett set off to photograph the event.
150 tables of 8 were put together to form the table that spanned the Esplanade Riel from the foot of the bridge in St. Boniface all the way to the base of the Human Rights Museum. Each table was decorated in a unique way by its ‘table captain’ who was in charge of the design/decor of their section and for keeping their group of seven others informed and entertained for the evening. To finish the aesthetic of the event, guests were asked to dress all in white (which to my surprise actually happened!) The result was the most magnificent dinner party I have ever seen.
The prairie inspired menu was served family style which included a cheese plate with an assortment of Bothwell cheese, four fresh salads that ranged from mouth watering watermelon and beets, to zucchini and hummus, along with two hot dishes of farmers sausage and brisket. This was all topped off with handmade chocolate and toffee brittle for dessert. The night flew by while working and trying to take in the successful evening of guests enjoying great food and conversation with an amazing view. What a way to begin this season, we can’t wait for the next few months of one our wonderful Winnipeg summers. With love, the charcoal collaborative.
