Just Recently the first edition of Soul Supper Club took place. For those of you who missed it, here is a recap of what was a very soulful evening. In collaboration with local hip-hop group The Lytics and larger than life front man of The Noble Thief’s Myron Dean, Charcoal had a night of inspired food and music hosted by Maw’s Eatery in The Exchange District of downtown Winnipeg.
It all started when we decided we wanted to provide people with a different kind of party; an evening inspired by great music and great food all beneath one roof. Thus, The Soul Supper Club was born. A party where the food was just as important as the music and where people could enjoy dinner and dance the night away without ever having to leave the building. The night started with a soul food dinner prepared by Jared Fossen with a menu consisted of classic soul food dishes with a twist. Offerings such as shrimp gumbo on basmati rice, fried oyster po’boys, ribs two ways (dry ribs and Jack Daniel’s BBQ) and deep fried macaroni croquettes were just a few of the small plate items served at dinner. After the savory there was a little sweetness in the form of beignets and peach cobbler, the perfect desert to finish off a great meal.
The food was fantastic and not to mention a great base layer for the post dinner party that was about to ensue. Kraken Rum was also kind enough to sponsor the dinner party and provided a complimentary beverage to each guest made with the wonderful spiced rum. After dinner, the party moved into the beer hall where The Lytics and Myron Dean spun soul music all night long while a crowd of over 300 guests danced to all the classics. While Chaka Khan and Marvin Gaye blasted through the speakers, everyone enjoyed some libations and shuffled on the dance floor.
